About

My story

An international artist, born in Dublin to Dutch parents, Jorien moved to a different country every 3 or 4 years. Having graduated from her art studies at Sarah Lawrence College, New York, Jorien now has her studio in Haarlem, The Netherlands. Her work is to be found in many international collections.

Her travels have influenced her work in many ways. Moving across so many borders, navigating through boundaries of culture, nationality and language, has shown her that beauty is everywhere and not culture-bound.

My work

Using different media, Jorien’s work often includes functional, ordinary objects such as straws, earplugs, cup-holders and stir-sticks and has a strong minimalist gesture. The installation pieces and sculptures have an organic quality to them that render the synthetic materials into a reminiscence of nature. Sometimes this is done through working with multiples, using repetition to enhance the essence of what attracted her to the material in the first place. The photographs are mostly close-ups of found objects, industrial and natural, that bring out their intrinsic beauty. These are attempts to “capture” (moments of) beauty. The paintings pare down visually to abstraction and become explorations of beauty in colour, texture, form and movement. These are often struggles to “get to” beauty. The digital compositions, or collages, are almost a combination of both, combining parts of captured beauty together to try and find another, or trying to get to an essence of beauty through combining certain shared qualities such as a texture or colour.

NEWS

Having graduated from her art studies at Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, New York, Jorien now has her studio in Haarlem, The Netherlands. Her travels have influenced her work in many ways. Moving across so many borders, navigating through boundaries of culture, nationality and language, has shown her that beauty is everywhere and not culture-bound. There is a fleeting essence that escapes most of us in our busy lives that has a universal quality.

Using different media, Jorien’s 3 dimensional work often includes functional, ordinary objects such as straws, earplugs, cup-holders and stir-sticks and has a strong minimalist gesture. The installation pieces and sculptures have an organic quality to them that render the synthetic materials into a reminiscence of nature. The paintings pare down visually to abstraction and become explorations of beauty in colour, texture, form and movement. These are often struggles between order and chaos in attempting to “get to” beauty. The digital compositions, or collages, are almost a combination of both, combining parts of captured beauty together to try and find another, or trying to get to an essence of beauty through combining certain shared qualities such as a texture or colour.

Recently Jorien has developed her explorations of Identity in portraits. Selecting images that resonate with what is seen and understood of the subject in relationship to their environment, be it public or private. Jorien uses digital collage to portray an interpretation and perception of the identity of the subject.

In all her work Jorien strives to bring out the beauty, or the potential for beauty, she sees in a material, shape, colour and/or form and how it interacts with its environment.
